Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support

The main focus of PBIS is to create and maintain a positive learning environment by empowering students and staff with a clear system for expected behaviors at Lime Kiln Middle School. There are several components of the program including teaching expected behaviors in all settings, acknowledging students when they demonstrate the expectations and providing interventions when the expectations are not met.  Through PBIS we will work to maintain a productive, safe environment in which ALL school community members have clear expectations and understandings of their roles in the educational process.

LKMS is proud to share that we have received the PBIS Maryland GOLD Recognition Award, the highest level of recognition in the state for the past 4 consecutive years.

All students participate in positive behavioral lessons where they are introduced to the school wide expectations and work together to individualize the expectations to meet the unique needs of classroom and other settings.  In addition, school wide activities are used to reinforce the expectations.  In the past, we have created school wide videos where every student and staff member developed their own way of showcasing the ROAR expectations, students have designed PAWsitive postcards and we held a logo design contest for the Limelighter T-shirt.

In order to support students in achieving at their highest level, Lime Kiln offers:

  • Daily evidence based reading intervention seminars to meet the decoding and comprehension reading needs of identified students,
  • Afterschool academic intervention in reading and math,
  • Friday school for academic support,
  • Daily check-in,
  • Ongoing anti-bullying lessons provided by the school counselors and,
  • New Student Orientation to promote a positive, successful academic and behavioral transition.

Staff engage in ongoing professional learning opportunities regarding strategies to support students all students.

PAWsitive Postcards

PAWsitive postcards include illustrations by our very own students!  Postcards are mailed to students who demonstrate the ROAR expectations.

Limelighters

On a regular basis the sixth, seventh, eighth and related arts teams nominate students for the Limelighter Award.  Students are chosen for consistently exemplifying the ROAR expectations.  Recipients are awarded a certificate, T-shirt and have their photo taken with the Principal and Assistant Principal.  The photos are displayed in the hallway.  In addition, a letter from the Principal and Assistant Principal is sent home specifically explaining the reasons the student was awarded Limelighters.

Consequences

Minor Incident Reports (MIRs) are given to students when they do not demonstrate Respect or Responsibility. MIRs are an opportunity for students to change a behavior before an office referral becomes necessary. Students will sign the MIR to acknowledge that they understand what they did wrong, and the staff person will contact the student’s parent or guardian and assign an appropriate consequence. Refusing to sign an MIR may result in an office referral.

Office referrals will be used for certain major offenses such as fighting, abusive/threatening language, cutting class, possession or use of drugs/alcohol/weapons, and failing to give a student’s name to any staff person when requested.
